TEMPLE, TX (December 18, 2024) – The Temple Police Department is investigating a shooting that left one officer injured.
At around 3:12 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18th an officer was in the area of the 100 block of N 11th Street when he heard gunshots. The officer approached where the gunshots may have come from and observed a disturbance between two individuals. A bystander had attempted to intervene with the disturbance and the suspect allegedly shot at him. The officer attempted to detain the individual, but the individual began to flee in his car. While attempting to flee the officer was dragged by the vehicle. The suspect then flees in the vehicle and crashes his car near Wendland Rd and Airport Rd, gets out of the vehicle and begins to run on foot into a wooded area. Officers are currently canvassing the area in an attempt to find the suspect.
One officer has been transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The bystander was also transported to the hospital with minimal injuries.
Kennedy-Powell Elementary School was put on a secure out of an abundance of caution.
There is extensive police presence near Wendland Rd and Industrial Blvd. We encourage people to avoid the area.
