City of Temple to Host Lions Park Playground Grand Reopening

TEMPLE, TX (August 10, 2026) – The City of Temple is excited to announce the grand reopening of Lions Park playground following improvements.

WHAT: Lions Park Playground Grand Reopening Ceremony

WHEN: Saturday, August 15, at 9 a.m.

WHERE: Lions Park, located at 4320 Lions Park Dr, Temple, TX

After being closed for demolition in February of this year, the new safari-themed playground will officially open during the ceremony. The playscape has been accessible to residents since May, and the grand reopening will commemorate the relationship between Temple Parks and Recreation and the Lions Club.

Established in 1975, Temple Lions Park was originally developed through a partnership between the City of Temple and the Temple Founder Lions Club and continues to reflect the city’s long-standing commitment to recreation, environmental stewardship and public gathering spaces.

The Lion's Club has been an integral support system for Lions Park. Our partnership with them goes back many years, and we are thankful for the ways they have supported this park and our Parks and Recreation Department.

In February of this year, Lions Park was designated as a 2026 Lone Star Legacy Park by the Texas Recreation and Park Society. This designation is one of the highest honors bestowed upon parks in the state of Texas. Earning this distinction placed Lions Park among an elite group of treasured public spaces celebrated for their historical significance, community impact and lasting legacy.

Lions Park is home to:

The A.J. Mercer Softball Complex
Three playgrounds
A fishing pond
An amphitheater
Soccer field
18-basket disc golf course
Horseshoe pits
A dog park
Community grills
12 picnic shelters and two picnic pavilions

The park is also home to the Charley Stout Nature Trail, designated a National Recreation Trail, which winds through scenic natural areas along Bird Creek.

The main upgrades to the 108-acre park include a new safari-themed playground and accessible sidewalks. Additionally, Lions Pavilion, which sits adjacent to the new playground, had its roof replaced.

We strive to keep our parks beautiful and inviting for all Temple residents. Updating the playground not only creates a new, exciting experience for families when they visit the park, but also allows us to install the latest playground equipment.
