TEMPLE, TX (March 6, 2026) — The City of Temple is improving efficiency, safety, and reliability across its municipal fleet through the implementation of a new telematics system utilizing Geotab technology. Installation across multiple city division vehicles is expected to be completed by April 2026.
The system uses a small device installed in each vehicle to collect real-time data on performance, location, and usage. This information is securely transmitted to a cloud-based platform, allowing staff to monitor fleet activity, receive alerts, and make more informed, data-driven decisions.
This investment allows us to be more proactive in how we maintain our vehicles and deliver services to residents. By using real-time data, we can reduce downtime, improve safety, and ensure our fleet is operating as efficiently as possible.
Seagram Porter, Fleet Services Division Director
The telematics system will support preventive maintenance by tracking engine hours, mileage, and diagnostic alerts, helping identify issues early and reduce costly repairs. It will also provide insight into fuel use, idling, and route efficiency to help lower costs and extend the life of city vehicles. Additionally, the system promotes safer driving by monitoring behaviors such as speed, braking, and seatbelt usage, allowing for improved accountability and training opportunities.
Devices will be installed on vehicles and equipment across several city departments, including Solid Waste, Drainage, Parks and Recreation, Streets, Code Enforcement, Water Distribution and Wastewater, Animal Control, Neighborhood Services, Facility Services, and Permits & Inspections.
This initiative reflects the City of Temple’s commitment to innovation and operational excellence in serving the community.
